Washakie

Seen mostly along the Gros Ventre River

Venerable Ol’ Warrior

I am positive I have photos of Washakie as far back as 2006. I can see a few in 2005 that might be Washakie. He was already a “show stopper” with his large brow tines. My last photos of Washakie were taken in 2017. During that span of time, I saw him with numerous broken tines. It was evident he battled regularly. Washakie had a variety of scars, including a distinguishing “warpaint” looking scar on the right side of his muzzle. Washakie was willing to fight at any time, but his large brow tines intimidated many of the challengers that backed off as he approached in his “cowboy walk”.

In 2016, Washakie was limping badly and spent more time bedded down than standing. In 2017, I didn’t see any evidence of a limp. Unfortunately, that was the last year I saw him. In 2016, I saw a young distant bull with a similar set of brow tines. I called him “faux Washakie” at the time. I am sure that was a young Shoshone, but I hadn’t named him yet.
