Owls

Great Gray Owls and Great Horned Owls inhabit the Jackson Hole region, but they are not easy to find! Great Gray Owls are by far the most sought after by most photographers. Saw Whet and Pygmy Owls are also known to hunt in the region, but due to their size, can be even more difficult to find. An occasional Long-eared Owl has been seen. I’ve heard of Burrowing Owls on the National Elk Refuge, but after  numerous trips there, I never saw one. Great Horned Owls are typically more skittish than Great Gray Owls. Great Grays hunt more in the daytime hours than Great Horned Owls. The Burrowing Owls on this page were taken in eastern Idaho.
