Shoshone

Majestic and Photogenic

The Gentle Giant of the Gros Ventre

Shoshone has to be my favorite bull moose I was able to photograph over a period of four or five years. For the first couple of years, he hung with Bannock, but when Bannock disappeared, Hoback filled the void. They were “buds” during the late summer as they grew their large velvet covered racks. Each year, Shoshone grew a new set of impressive antlers, complete with majestic and distinctive brow times. In 2016, I photographed a sleek bull moose from a distance that I labeled “faux Washakie”. I am sure it was Shoshone.

Unfortunately, Shoshone didn’t show up in the fall of 2022. I’d like to think he simply found a new stomping ground.

For What It’s Worth: I recently saw a post on the Internet called “Chased by a Moose in GTNP”. The author said Shoshone chased him and two others through the swamps, forests, and sagebrush for a mile or so. I don’t believe a single word of it!
